As a first-time home buyer, it’s easy to get caught up in the aesthetics of a house and miss the bigger picture. There are ten major factors you should consider before selecting a home. Once you’ve narrowed down the pickings to your home of choice, be sure to order a home inspection from Magnolia Home Inspection Services before completing the purchase.

Ten Things to Look For in a Home

1. Location

A home is only as valuable as the neighborhood around it. Before you even look at a house, consider it’s proximity to work, the charm and safety of the neighborhood, proximity of neighbors, ease of access, and traffic. You should also think about access to parks, schools, and public transportation.

2. The Site

After approving a home’s location, consider how the home is situated on the lot. It’s important to look at the landscape of the yard and its suitability for your family’s lifestyle. Furthermore, consider the home’s privacy (window locations, neighbors’ view of the home, etc.) and accessibility (driveway elevation, steps to front entrance, etc.).

3. The Neighborhood

Another important factor is the size and quality of the neighborhood. If other homes in the neighborhood are rundown or unkempt, it may affect the resale value of your home and indicate potential problems with neighbors. Alternatively, don’t overbuy the market; buying a mansion in a neighborhood full of bungalows puts your home at the top of the market, making it a difficult sell down the road.

4. Curb Appeal

A home’s appearance says a lot about a homeowner. Therefore, consider homes that reflect your personal style. Also, take into account the condition and appearance of the home’s roof, landscaping, sidewalks, and driveway.

5. Size and Floor Plan

Bigger is not always better in the housing industry; bigger houses come with bigger taxes and maintenance bills. Instead, consider what you actually need from a home, and how you will utilize the space. Consider if the home’s layout will fit your lifestyle for years to come.
